Head of Primary's Welcome Letter 2017-2018

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to a new school year, I very much hope you have had a relaxing summer and that your child/ren are rested and raring to go!

We have welcomed 16 new teachers into the primary school, whom you will have the chance to meet over the course of the next few weeks and months. As is often the case in a large school, plans do not always work out as anticipated and the teacher appointed as Assistant Head KS2 Leader, decided not to join us.

Therefore, after interviewing a number of internal candidates during the summer break, we appointed Mr Carlin to this leadership position. I hope you will join me in congratulating him on this promotion when you see him. However it does mean that he will not be teaching the class he was assigned this year (3B).

To replace Mr Carlin I have appointed Mrs Nadira Rahman and I am delighted to welcome her to DBS. Mrs Rahman joins us from a school in the UK and has considerable experience, both in class teaching and leadership and management. She will also take on the role as Progress Leader for Year 3.

Also during the holidays, Miss Bernadette Coyne decided not to return therefore I have recruited Miss Beverley Rainbow to the Early Years team. Not only does Miss Rainbow have the best name for a Reception class teacher, she is also very enthusiastic and eager to develop her career at DBS.

Please also note that Mr Latham has replaced Miss Lowe as Deputy Head for the Primary School.

Finally, I would also like to welcome all the new teaching assistants to the school and of course, the new children.

First day back: drop off and pick up. The front gate is open at 6.30am and the side and back gates are open at 6.45am. All classes begin at 7.05am.

There are roadworks taking place around the school. Therefore it is essential that you park as far away as possible and walk your children to school. There is a one-way system operating on the roads around the school which must be followed. Staff will be outside on main junctions to help the flow of traffic but please be aware of signs and direction indicators.

Please note the following:

Early years (Pre-school and Reception) pupils will have a staggered start for the first week back. Please can all preschool and reception parents enter via the main gate, then the Pre-school entrance at the start and end of each session.

Year 1 and 2 parents: Please take your child to the sports hall next to the MPH where the class teachers will meet their class and take the children into the school.

Year 3 - 6 parents: Please drop your children at the side or back gates. I appreciate this is a big change for the new Year 3 pupils but in order to promote independence, it is important this happens. Of course, if your Year 3 child is having difficulty with this drop-off procedure during the first week, please feel free to accompany him or her inside the school grounds. All staff will be on the playground to meet the children, give reassurance and assist them to their lines when the whistle goes.

Reading Books

After a long summer holiday, children can often take a step back in their reading, therefore to give the correctly staged home reading book, we are spending the first 2-3 weeks assessing reading ages of the children to ensure any changes in reading stage are an accurate reflection of where your child needs to be.  This process is very comprehensive and in order for it to be correct you must allow us the time to complete it. Some year groups may get their reading books before others, this simply is down to how quickly a year group is assessed.

To bridge the gap I would suggest you access the wide range of free staged books on the link below. There are also activities and activity sheets should you wish. Oxford Owl free ebooks

If your child has previously been a free reader we will still be assessing their reading age and checking any anomalies but they should be given their reading book more quickly.

The school library will be open from week 2 where your child will have their usual allocation of books of their choice.

Welcome Pack

There is a welcome pack available via the link here for all new parents, however it may well be useful for all parents so please take a look.

New PE Kits

Due to the continuing issue with border sanctions, the delivery of the new PE kits is delayed. In the interim, pupils can wear the kit from previous years or a plain white t-shirt and dark blue or black sports shorts. Pre-school to year 3 pupils should wear their kits on PE days, while year 4 to year 6 students should wear their regular uniform and bring their PE kits in a sports bag.

******** Second Hand Uniform Sale - PLEASE TAKE NOTE **********

There will be a sale of good quality second hand school uniform at Doha Rugby Club on Thursday 14th September, 10.00am - 11.30am. All items are QR20 and proceeds will be used within the Primary School.

PE on Sunday

Please note that the following classes will have PE on Sunday 10th September.

1B, 1C, 1E, 2A, 2E, 3A, 3D, 5A, 5B, 5C, 6C, 6D

Pupils in Year 1, 2 and 3 are able to wear PE kit to school whereas Year 4, 5 and 6 have to bring their kit to change at school.

ECAs (Extra Curricular Activities)

Mr Bell is now responsible for overseeing the ECA programme for the whole school and Miss Kenneford for the Primary school. Mr Bell will be writing to you about the developments in the ECA programme but I wanted to share with you the new name we are using for all Primary ECAs. All pupils in the Primary school will be part of the ‘Cubs’ ECA programme and the Secondary will be part of the ‘Lions’. Together, we will be the ‘DBS Pride’. I think this is a brilliant initiative from Mr Bell and will give the pupils a strong sense of identity.

The Cubs ECA programme starts on 1st October and the Google Sheet for signing up will be available in the next few weeks. Any questions please direct them to either Mr Bell, thomas.bell@dohabritishschool.com or Miss Kenneford, georgia.kenneford@dohabritishschool.com.
