To my surprise I was welcomed so well – my fellow students and teachers were very friendly. The teachers were very supportive of me and willing to run History, a subject I am very interested in, at Higher Level for me, even though no one else was studying it at the time. The fact they were willing to open that door for me showed how flexible and supportive DBS and the teachers are. They have opened my eyes, created opportunities for me, and have made me feel really valued.

DBS is just an amazing school, in terms of the quality and experience of teachers, the experiences we’re provided, and the level of support we’re given along the way. I’m planning to study business at a university in Canada, and the support we are provided by DBS’s teachers and career counsellor is fantastic. They are there for you, no matter what.

I have developed as a person, because the teachers have always encouraged me - they take you beyond what you think you are capable of. I want to study chemistry or biology with a view to going into pharmacology, which I wouldn’t have really thought about if it weren’t for an opportunity DBS secured for me to present at a medical conference. The teachers and career counsellors really do help to prepare us for our future beyond DBS.

DBS alumni community is accomplished diverse and vibrant. Whether you are a new graduate or left the school many years ago, we want you to feel connected to each other and to the school. Visiting the alumni community is the way to do that.

My advice to students applying to universities is to look at the rank of the university. It is more important than the country, quality of education over anything.

Applying to University sounds like a huge step, but I think it’s important to remember that University is nothing but the next step. A stepping stone for a future career - and by no means more difficult than the path you’re currently walking. University aims to provide an atmosphere where you’re welcomed for not knowing how to do your laundry, or how to cook proper food - and you’re never alone. Everyone is on the same boat, and the journey together is what University is all about. Aim to reach your predicted grades - go beyond if you can, but don’t be frightened by the idea of University and apply to one where you feel at home.

One of the greatest life lessons I have learnt in just two years of university is that rejections and failures are a part of the learning process. It is completely normal to take longer than others to figure out your life – to be undecided about your university major, to find it hard to live alone and to take a long time to get used to university lectures and the content. But my impression has been that in any situation, perseverance (with a little help from others) takes you a long way.

The wonderful teachers at DBS guided me through some of the greatest but the toughest years of my life, never tiring of my infinite number of questions and always finding the time to have a little chat with us. I have honestly learnt so much during my time at school and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the people I met at DBS and the memories that I’ve created with them.

My advice for students who are applying to universities is to start the application process early in order to meet all the deadlines as well as students should have a backup plan for more than one university.
